UK: LONDON: MCQUEEN/WILLIAMSON FASHION SHOWS

Natural Sound
Alexander McQueen has shown the fashion world that he is still the king of the London catwalks, blanketing an icy catwalk in snow and draping his models in leathers, metals and fur.
But it was up-and-coming British star Matthew Williamson whose colourful designs drew top models Naomi Campell, Alek Wek and Jodie Kidd.
What better than ice queens to present an autumn/winter collection inspired by snow storms and blustery wind?
In what he says will be his last show in London, British designer Alexander McQueen proved why he’s at the helm of Cool Britannia.
Showing his collection at a former rubbish dump-turned-winter wonderland, McQueen wowed audiences with a stunning set that took days to put together – as well as the elaborate and often wacky designs he has become famous for.
And if the designs themselves weren’t set to cause a storm on their own, McQueen’s crew sent manufactured snow flurrying down on the models.
It was a magical sight in McQueen’s fantasy box, where furs and leathers were still politically correct.
The designer himself was apparently so pleased that he danced a jig at the end of the show.
But his pleasure does not extend to London Fashion Week in general.
McQueen says he’s taking his designs on the road next season, amid widespread complaints that London doesn’t draw enough buyers.
His up-and-coming counterpart Matthew Williamson was able to draw some top beauties, however.
America’s Amber Valetta opened his show in a colourful silk gown.
Supermodel Naomi Cambell wasn’t far behind in shocking pink.
Amazonian model Jodie Kidd also made an appearance, as did Alek Wek.
Some critics wondered why Williamson showed such a light, bright collection during a Fashion Week pegged to autumn/winter.
But it appeared that where the winds were blowing McQueen out of town, the English sun was still shining on Matthew Williamson.
